The worst epidemic in modern history was the 1918 to 1920 swine flu epidemic. It had four "spikes" of infections and deaths, with a large seasonal trend. An initial small spike, two large spikes, and then a final small spike. The virus mutated into a less deadly variant, and still remains with us today. That was with no vaccines and no cures. Over time, the most vulnerable people died. And with every month, more people gained natural antibodies after recovering from the disease. Eventually reaching herd immunity, which means the number of infections is no longer increasing ... and hopefully decreasing.
The UK had two "spikes" so far.
